Loft conversions and driveways - NEW RULES

Loft conversions and driveways – NEW RULES

New planning rules come into force today (1 October 2008) that allow certain size loft conversions, home extensions and driveways to be constructed without planning permissions.

The government has launched a useful interactive tool to make it easier for home-owners to check whether what they want to do is permitted under the new rules.  Follow this link http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/hhg/houseguide.html and click on the area of your property you’d like to change and a pop up will tell you the basics.

It is hoped that the new rules will release some 80,000 applications from the planning system.  The changes come into play partly as a result of the floodings of recent years… driveways over 5m squared will need to use materials and schemes that allow water to drain into the land in order to take advantage of the new rules.
