• There are currently regulations in place which prevent agencies from supplying companies with temporary workers to cover for striking workers (or to perform the duties of an employee who has been assigned to cover a striking worker).

The government has published a consultation, seeking views on the removal of this provision. The aim is to reduce the impact of strike action by making sure businesses can continue to operate during a strike.

The Conservative Manifesto included a commitment to repeal “nonsensical restrictions banning employers from hiring agency staff to provide essential cover during strikes”. The consultation closes on 9 September 2015.
