New Employment Tribunal Statistics

New Employment Tribunal Statistics

Provisional employment tribunal statistics have been published by the Ministry of Justice for October to December 2017.

These provide the first clear indication of the impact of the abolition of tribunal fees.  It is, as predicted, quite stark:

  • Single claims received by the Employment Tribunal have increased by 90%.
  • Multiple claims received by the Employment Tribunal have increased by 467%.

Single claims received by the Employment Tribunal that have been disposed of has increased by 21%.

Due to many more single claims being brought than are being disposed of the backlog of claims has increased by 66%.

As expected the removal of fees has contributed significantly to an increase in claims.

In addition, October 2017 saw the launch of the Employment Tribunal Refund Scheme. This has received 4800 applications for a refund and 3400 have received their refund. This totalled £2,758,316.
