Passenger’s spinal injury compensation after sudden braking
The client’s story
Our client was a passenger in a vehicle when the driver stopped suddenly causing our client to be thrust forward and hit his head on the dashboard; unfortunately he was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver had allegedly been ‘rubber-necking’ an accident on the opposite carriageway and did not notice until very late that the vehicles in front had slowed down.
Our client suffered a spinal injury resulting in immediate paralysis and had to be cut out of the vehicle by the emergency services and taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a specialist spinal injury unit where he spent over three months.
Fortunately, he made a partial recovery from his spinal injury and was able to walk again but was left with some mobility issues and bladder problems. The prospects of his ever returning to work were poor.
