The agreement to call off the strike happened hours before the first strike was due to begin, which would have had a significant impact on hospitals in England.
The health secretary has been requesting for a long time to impose a new contract on 45,000 junior doctors and 98% of them voted in favour of strike action as a result. The contract seeks to impose a change to hours of work, meaning more hours would be paid at their basic rate. The health secretary wants to impose ‘plain time’ until 10pm every day, except on a Sunday. Plain time is currently paid until 7pm. It is hoped the change in hours will ensure doctors do not work excessively long hours which could be dangerous.
It is estimated that 20,000 non-urgent operations planned to take place on Tuesday did not go ahead as a result of the planned strike.
