International and Cross Border
Legal advice involving international or cross-border matters.
At Brachers we are proud to regularly advise clients whose business or personal ventures involve an international dimension.
Why choose Brachers?
Lawyers from across our multi-service practice areas, including corporate and commercial law, litigation, employment, commercial and residential property, private client, private wealth protection and family law, can support you through the complexities that come from adding an international dimension to your legal need. Whether you are considering an overseas investment, looking to structure inheritance planning involving overseas assets, or taking enforcement action against persons or entities resident in a foreign jurisdiction or any other cross-border adventure, we will have the experience and contacts necessary to support you.
Successful cross-border matters require an advisor who is able to coordinate, understand and deliver clear advice involving the UK and other relevant overseas jurisdiction(s) to ensure a comprehensive solution is achieved for the client. As such, in addition to providing advice on the English law aspects of matters, we regularly act as the coordinating counsel, assisting our clients to procure and then utilise the advice provided by overseas lawyers to ensure a successful result.
Furthermore, as a member of the Marcalliance network of lawyers, we are also able to provide you with seamless access to a network of lawyers from across the globe to provide plain English and practical advice on foreign law issues. This network comprises over 20 law firms that work together, as specialists in each of their own jurisdictions to provide our clients with seamless legal expertise wherever their interests lie.

Family Law and International Divorce
Dealing with a divorce or other family issues with an international element involved can be complicated and sometimes it may be hard to understand your position. Our family lawyers are experienced in providing clear and strategic advice in cases involving:
- International divorce considerations – consideration on where your divorce may be best issued and the extent of any risks in applications being made out of the jurisdiction
- Financial settlements involving assets held in foreign jurisdiction and consideration of tax issues
- Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements involving assets and property abroad
- Relocating or moving abroad with children – if you are considering moving abroad with children or believe your partner may want to relocate
Will and Tax Planning: Ownership of Property or Assets Abroad
If you are a UK resident who owns, or is considering owning, property outside of the UK, we would advise talking to our private client team about your Will and consider having a Will both in the UK and abroad. It is important to understand where you stand and the laws that also govern the country you have property in.
If you are considering using your property abroad as a rental investment then it is worth talking to our team about tax planning and understanding your position with regards to tax, including inheritance tax, capital gains and income tax.
If you are not a UK resident and you have assets in the UK, we would suggest you get advice from our team on UK tax implications and other legal issues such as what would happen in the event of your death.
Our Probate team are experienced in dealing with probate and estate administration where the deceased was living overseas and working together with international lawyers and accountants where there may be multi-jurisdictional estates involved.
