We imagine a similar percentage of Kent’s hospitals are also infused with asbestos. Most of our hospitals (and other public buildings) were built in the decades after the war when asbestos was heavily used as a “magic mineral” for its insulation and fire protection.
Unfortunately, as this deadly material now starts to fall apart it risks exposing ordinary NHS staff (or even patients). Mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases was once the preserve of people like factory workers making asbestos products or tradesmen installing or removing them.
Sadly, decades later it’s also dedicated public servants like doctors and nurses and teachers that are increasingly at risk of mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases. Some have described this risk as “like a ticking time bomb”.
