The plan is aimed at increasing flexibility and choice when it comes to arranging parental leave and to support working parents with childcare in the first year of the child’s life. Evidence suggests that nearly 2million grandparents have altered their working life to assist with childcare and that more than half of mothers rely on grandparents for childcare.
The Government intends to consult on this further later this year.
