  • Tell us about your career at Brachers

I joined the Commercial Property team at Brachers in May 2010 having been recruited from another Kent law firm. Before that I spent a number of years as the planning lawyer at a local authority. In 2016 I was promoted to partner and since 2020 I have headed up the firm’s Canterbury Office.

In a few sentences, describe a typical day for you.

I specialise in the areas of town and country planning and environmental law. Most of my work is with developers, land owners and businesses on projects such as housing and commercial developments. But I have a diverse range of clients from major international businesses to sole traders and individual householders. As well as managing my own case load I also support other parts of the firm, for example, assisting the commercial property team and the corporate team with transactions where there is an issue which touches upon planning or environmental law.

  • What do you like most about what you do here at Brachers?

One of the best aspects of my role is that I get to spend a lot of time meeting clients on site. This might be looking around commercial premises where there has been a suspected breach of environmental legislation or trudging around a farmer’s field considering the site’s development potential – I always keep a pair of wellies in the car for such occasions. I also spend a fair bit of time representing clients in court and at other hearings and public inquiries, with venues as diverse as the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand, in all its Victorian gothic revival splendour, and the local Magistrates Court which are usually neither gothic nor splendid!

What are you most proud of, working at Brachers?

I am always very proud to tell people that I work at Brachers as the firm has a great reputation in the business community within Kent and further afield. The firm’s adherence to its values and ethos help to maintain that reputation with a focus on quality and achieving the client’s objectives.
